The most popular cars in Australia [2024]

Buying a shiny new car can bring all the excitement in, but unless you have a very clear idea on the type of car you want and the budget you have to spend, making your selection can quickly become a little less joyful and a lot more stressful.

To make your car selection process run a little smoother, we’re sharing the latest on the most popular cars in Australia.

This will give you a good indicator on the types of vehicles that Aussies find safest, most comfortable, and tailored to the country’s diverse terrain.

With this knowledge under your belt, you can make a more informed choice when picking your own set of wheels.

In 2020 Aussies drove almost 240,000 million kilometres, and more than 927,426 new vehicles have been delivered into Australia this year alone.

Aussies sure do love their cars. Given how big the country is, and just how many kilometres the average Australian covers each year (15,500km) it’s no wonder vehicles are a top priority for residents.

So, it’s fair to say Australians know a few things about driving, cars and choosing vehicles to best suit the unique needs of this vast country. And there are thousands of different types of cars to choose from.

The question is: out of hundreds of thousands of vehicles, which makes and models have proved the most popular in the country?

Let’s find out.

The most popular car brands in the country

The latest Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) report shows the most popular car brands in Australia are:

  1. Toyota with 18,110 sales through the month of September

  2. Ford with 8,303 sales throughout the month of September

  3. Mazda with 8201 sales throughout the month of September

  4. Kia with 7,650 sales throughout the month of September

  5. Mitsubishi with 6,130 sales throughout the month of September

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said the most popular cars list reflects three clear trends for car purchasing in Australia.

  1. SUV’s and utes are the vehicle of choice (80% of sales)

  2. Lower emission vehicles are on the rise

  3. Battery electric vehicles have yet to make a significant impact in the market

“Nine of the top ten vehicles sold during September were in the Medium or Large SUV or Light Commercial segments. Second, across the board customers are showing a willingness to take steps towards lower emission vehicles with sales of hybrid and plug-in hybrid continuing to increase. Third, recorded sales of battery electric vehicles are again disappointing this month.” Mr Weber said.

Class 2024 TOTAL

I must admit that overall experience was great. Logan was a great helper. Communication was easy and quick. Only thing that I didn’t like was an extra charge. When I initiate the request on upmove, i chose the vehicle as “I don’t know” in a field - “Is vehicle drivable?”. Then IAT tried to tow my car from the pick up address and got unsuccessful because they expected a car to be drivable. But I mentioned the vehicle is not drivable. Then I was told that there will be extra 90$ for non-drivable vehicle. I paid and they resolved the issue quickly. Again thanks for the fast service. This is just a heads up for those who are towing a car that is non-drivable. Make sure to tell them again about car condition if you dont want to pay extra.
